Description
In 1928 the plaintiff purchased land in Manchester on which she erected a residence together with a stable, paddock, and caretaker's house. Before the buildings were constructed the defendant Fred Allard came to Manchester to work for her. He owned a farm in South Weare and had been employed by the plaintiff at her place called ""Hill Top"" in that town. In September, 1928, he and his wife moved into the caretaker's house (No. 1407 Union Street) and occupied it until 1932, when Allard left the plaintiff's employ and returned to South Weare. During the spring of 1934 the plaintiff was traveling in Europe. She arrived in Manchester on June 14 and made arrangements with Allard to resume work for her. According to the defendants' testimony, Allard had commenced work at the Manchester place a week before her arrival. On June 21 she purchased Allard's farm for $6,000, and on June 27 the defendants again moved into the caretaker's house. Allard received as wages $36 a week and paid no rent. His employment continued until May 28, 1938, when the plaintiff discharged him.
